The ThirdWorkshop of Stellar Observations Network Group (Second Announcement) DOC | PDF
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the third SONG Workshop to be held in Beijing on 29 March to 2 April of 2010. This meeting continues the series of SONG workshops which were held in Aarhus, Denmark in 2006 and 2009.
In addition to the Danish SONG funding obtained in 2008 to build the SONG prototype telescope, the Chinese SONG group is in the process of funding a SONG node in China and the SONG group in the US has applied to NSF for grants to construct two SONG nodes in continental US and Hawaii, respectively. This will hopefully lead to the building of northern part of the SONG network in a few years. First light of the prototype SONG telescope on the Teide Observatory is expected in 2011.
It is therefore time to proceed further with major aspects of the SONG network. The first of these concerns the major science cases of SONG of asteroseismology and exoplanet searches, using Doppler-velocity and Lucky-imaging observations.
Furthermore, additional science with the default SONG network and possible additional instruments should be evaluated. A final aspect concerns strategies in relation to organization of the SONG network aiming at securing the construction and running of the full global network, including the survey of possible sites for SONG nodes.
